30min: Software Heritage - the Universal Archive of Free Software
Software Heritage - the Universal Archive of Free Software
Software Heritage is a major undertaking for collecting, organising, preserving on the long term and sharing all free software source code, that has been started at Inria one year ago and is now opening up for global participation. It has potential impact on a broad set of fields and will be of interest to a wide audience.
The Software Heritage initiative is building the universal archive of the source code of all the software publicly available. Our main goal is to ensure long term preservation of and broad accessibility of the technological and scientific knowledge of mankind that is now embedded in the many free software components that are pervasives in all aspects of our modern societies. Many applications can be built on top of this fundamental infrastructure, ranging from cultural studies to teaching material, from scientific applications to industrial tools. In this talk we will introduce this novel archive, describe our goals and motivations, and explain how we are preparing to open our work for participation from all who are interested.
